GARCHING, Germany, Oct 27, 2026 - Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope have announced the discovery of a double debris disc around white dwarf J1328−1450. [1] The research was published in the journal Nature Astronomy during the week of 27 October 2026. [2] Researchers estimate two planetary bodies maintain the disc. One is small asteroid sized. The second is potentially Pluto or Moon sized. [3] Space Nugget. A white dwarf is the hot, dense core left behind when a Sun-like star dies, packing roughly the Sun's mass into a body about the size of Earth. Rings of dust and rock around one are usually the shattered remains of asteroids or planets that strayed too close and were torn apart by its gravity.
