PARIS, France, Oct. 14, 2026 - The European Space Agency's Hera mission is scheduled to rendezvous with the Dimorphos-Didymos binary asteroid system in November.[1] New analysis filed 14 October finds data gathered by Hera will reduce uncertainty in Dimorphos' dynamical state by up to 90% under chaotic orbital scenarios. The measurements will also produce far more precise estimates for asteroid mass, rotation and moments of inertia.[2] Hera launched on 7 October 2024. It is travelling to the site where NASA's DART mission impacted the smaller asteroid Dimorphos in 2022.[3] [4] The mission will build on that test to advance planetary defence capabilities.[5] Space Nugget. A binary asteroid system is made up of a larger primary asteroid and a smaller orbiting moon asteroid. This paired structure allows extremely accurate measurement of mass changes by tracking orbital period.
