PARIS, France, Oct. 19, 2026 - ESA's Solar Orbiter[1] has traced a magnetic switchback in the solar wind back to its source at the Sun for the first time, according to a paper in Nature Astronomy led by Jesse T. Coburn.[2][3] A switchback is an S-shaped kink in the solar wind's magnetic field.[4] Solar Orbiter flew through one[5] and sampled its particles with its Solar Wind Analyser instrument.[6] Those particles show the switchback was formed by a process called interchange reconnection,[7] while waves and turbulence shape switchbacks after they leave the Sun,[8] so both act at different stages of a switchback's life.[9] Space Nugget. The solar wind is a constant stream of charged particles flowing out from the Sun and carrying its magnetic field with it. Understanding how that wind is launched and shaped helps scientists forecast space weather, which can disrupt satellites and power grids on Earth.
