ROME, Italy, Oct 16, 2026 - Two independent astronomy studies released this month have advanced understanding of how planetary systems form. A paper published in Nature Astronomy has demonstrated for the first time a genetic link between a host star and its planets that shapes the birth, dynamical evolution and future stability of the entire system. Phys.org reports the work was carried out by an international team led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, which analysed a sample of 300 of the best characterised planetary systems drawn from more than 1000 known systems in the Milky Way [1][2]. A second team, led by Pietro Curone, used ALMA's maximum extended configuration to observe 11 compact protoplanetary disks in the Lupus star-forming region. That work was reported by Astrobiology on Oct 15 [3].
