PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Oct 27, 2026 - Frequent meteorite impacts have been identified as a major risk for the planned lunar base. [1] A 2021 asteroid impact on the Moon created a crater 222 metres wide and over 40 metres deep. [2] The base is intended for scientific research and as an intermediate launch stop for Mars missions. [3] As of 6 October 2026, a second satellite was planned for launch in 2028. [4] Space Nugget. The Moon has no air to slow or burn up incoming space rocks, so even tiny grains strike the surface at many kilometres per second. That is why designs for lunar bases consider burying habitats under soil or placing them in caves and lava tubes.
