NASA held a ribbon-cutting on 2026-09-10 to mark the full restoration of its Guam Remote Station, which was damaged by Super Typhoon Mawar in 2023.

Without the station, the International Space Station could lose contact with Earth for up to 20 minutes of every 90-minute orbit, an unacceptable risk for crewed missions, NASA said.

Since the ISS's first crew arrived in 2000, astronauts and scientists have carried out more than 4,000 experiments aboard the station. Microgravity research has produced insights into treatments for cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and heart disease, conditions affecting millions of people. NASA described the ISS's creation as 'the most complex international collaboration ever undertaken,' involving the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan, and European Space Agency member countries.
